This is my third TomTom and a replacement for my Go 910 model. My eldest son is still using my first TomTom and is looking forward to having the 910. I have delayed upgrading because the only complaint I have about the 910 is its size. Reviews on Amazon have also held me back from the 940 but as time has gone on and my maps have got more and more out of date the temptation to upgrade has increased. Then the Go 950 Live was released and I went for it. I travel a lot with work and rent cars abroad. Put simply I got tired of lumping the 910 around and the maps (UK and USA) were beginning to show their age. Why fork out for the map upgrade service when I can put the cost towards a new machine.
I am really pleased with the 950. I have used it in the UK and Ireland so far and it has been excellent. A significant improvement on the 910. Everything works as it should including the Live services. The 950 has paired with my iPhone and now acts as a car kit for the iPhone allowing me to ditch the headset/earpiece. As soon as I turn the TomTom on it automatically links to the iPhone, which is more than the Apple earpiece does.
There are a few changes I have had to get used too. I had the 910 set up for the screen to change to blue if my speed crept over 70mph. I cannot seem to do that on the 950 but I have set the speed warnings anyway. I would like to be able to reposition some of the information readouts on the bottom of the screen. It would have been neat if there had been a way to transfer my favourites from one TomTom to the other. Perhaps there is. Who cares because I really really like the new machine. I would recommend buying the TomTom hard case to protect the 950. It does not add too much to the size and provides good protection to the TomTom.
Since posting this review I have now tested the Live features in traffic. I ignored the first re-route as I was on home territory and was prepared to take the risk that my route was better. Then leaving Cardiff I got a traffic warning and a re-route option. I was about to ignore this too when I saw the brake lights ahead, so left the road as recommended and was taken around the traffic to join the M4 one junction earlier than planned. I could have found the re-route myself but would never have thought of using it. Cannot fault the TomTom. I accept that it is only one incident but it saved a significant amount of time. I am now seriously considering taking the subscription to Live services when the free month expires.
And .. the great thing about the size compared with the 910 is that it fits in my wife's handbag much better. |

| The tom tom go 950 sat nav is one of the best i have seen,The large touch screen is very easy to navigate and the voice comands are very clear. The main features of interest for me are the speed camera detector the live updates and the 3D lane image.I would recomend this product 100% |

Okay this is only one of a very few reviews that I've ever left. Felt it was important to balance off some of the negative reviews given so far on this product. Hence giving this a 5 star, whereas normally I would have given it 4 stars as the product is anything but perfect. So here goes:
It doesn't play through the FM receiver - So what. The volume is more than adequate.
It doesn't work as an MP3 - Fair complaint, but if you are really that interested in listening to MP3 or Ipods in the car then there's plenty of cheap alternative solutions.
It's expensive - I don't think so. I had the GO520 before this and I think it was a very similar price, if not more expensive. This is much cheaper than their previous version (910, 920, 930, 940) (I think!).
It takes it time to re-route - Okay fair cop, but come on just be patient; it will get there within 10 seconds rather than 5 seconds. Surely you can wait.
And the best rant (either on Amazon or other sites) so far is that the subscription service is costly. I really don't thinks so. If your commute takes you in or near London (or similar congested areas) then this little device 'should' save you time. Most of the time this will equal saving you fuel. Even if it doesn't save you too much fuel, it will certainly get you home to your loved ones earlier than if you didn't have the subscription. And for all those out there that think we should be getting this service for free, I'm sure that this will eventually happen, but in the meantime guess what - you can elect either not to pay for the subscription or get an inferior product.
I'm sure there are some real genuine complaints out there, and I'm sure that others have a much higher expectation than me for a SatNav, but for me this device does what it says on the tin!

Bought this product via Amazon. The item itself is very good and came with a one month free HD traffic which worked very well. However at the time of purchase TomTom were also offering a 1 Year Free HD Traffic to follow the one month free. We complied with all terms and conditions to apply for this offer but to date it has not been activated. We have Emailed TomTom on several occasions but again, to date have not even had the courtesy of a response let alone activation of the Live system. There is no telephone contact number given to enable us to deal with this problem direct. NOT HAPPY with this level of service. Advertising a special offer and then not supplying it seems like sharp practice to me! Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? |
